Hill Country
Enchanted Rock State Natural Area protects a massive pink granite batholith that rises 425 feet above the surrounding Hill Country floor to an elevation of 1,825 feet. The iconic Summit Trail is a moderately strenuous 0.8-mile (one-way) climb across open granite to panoramic views, while the 4.6-mile Loop Trail circles the base and stays open until 10 p.m. — later than the other trails. Nearly 11 miles of total trail cover the property, and primitive backpacking campsites at Moss Lake and Walnut Springs sit 1 to 3 miles from the trailhead. The park is a designated International Dark Sky Park, making stargazing after sunset exceptional. Rock climbing is permitted with check-in at headquarters; four permitted guide services operate here. Day-use passes sell out frequently — reserve online in advance, especially on spring and fall weekends. No swimming or biking on trails is allowed, and pets are restricted to the Loop Trail and campground on a 6-foot leash. Bring your own water.
Shade Details
Virtually no shade on the summit dome. The base loop has limited shade from oak mottes. Avoid midday in summer.
Conditions & Tips
