About

Garner State Park on the Frio River is the most visited state park in Texas, and for good reason. The crystal-clear Frio River runs cold even in July, the bald cypress canopy is exceptional, and the overnight camping under the stars is hard to beat. Hiking trails climb limestone bluffs above the river for sweeping canyon views. Reservations are essential — it books out months in advance for summer weekends. Day-use passes also fill up fast.

Shade Details

Dense bald cypress canopy along the river and campground. Bluff trails are more exposed.

Conditions & Tips

Book camping 6+ months ahead for summer weekends — it sells out. Day-use also fills fast. The Frio River is cold enough to swim in July. Jukebox dances on summer evenings are a Texas tradition.

Frio River can drop in severe drought — check water levels before summer trips.
