Hill Country
Inks Lake State Park sits on the northeastern edge of the Llano Uplift, exposing some of the oldest geology in Texas — approximately 1.1-billion-year-old pink granites and 1.3-billion-year-old Valley Spring gneiss visible throughout the park. Because Inks Lake functions as a pass-through reservoir in the Highland Lakes chain, its water level stays nearly constant year-round, making it one of the most reliable swimming and paddling destinations in Central Texas. Paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards are available for rent daily. Nine miles of hiking trails include routes to the scenic Devil's Waterhole, a granite-walled cove popular for cliff jumping and swimming. Nearly 200 campsites and 22 cabins accommodate overnight visitors, and two fishing piers reach bass, catfish, and sunfish without a license. The park is about 75 miles northwest of Austin near Burnet. Reserve campsites and cabins well in advance for spring and summer weekends.
Shade Details
Live oaks around campsites provide good shade. The lake and granite outcrops are mostly exposed. Water temperature makes sun exposure manageable on the lake.
Conditions & Tips
Book camping 6+ months out for summer weekends. Devil's Waterhole swimming hole is the most popular spot — crowded by 10am on summer weekends. October has perfect weather and smaller crowds.
