South Texas Edge
Lake Dunlap is a 410-acre reservoir on the Guadalupe River in Guadalupe County, created in 1931 as one of six hydroelectric lakes built along the Guadalupe between New Braunfels and Seguin. The lake gained regional attention in May 2019 when the dam's 90-year-old middle spillway unexpectedly collapsed, draining nearly the entire lake within hours. After residents formed a water control district and approved a dedicated property tax, a new dam was constructed and completed on August 31, 2023; the lake reached full pool by October 2023, restoring boating, fishing, and waterfront recreation. The GBRA manages the dam and actively stocks the lake with white crappie, sunfish, flathead, channel, and blue catfish, as well as largemouth bass — supplementing naturally present Guadalupe bass and striped bass. At a maximum depth of 40 feet and with notably clear water, the lake is popular with wakeboarders, water skiers, and families who appreciate its relatively calm, semi-private character. The only free public boat ramp is located at the Interstate 35 overpass in New Braunfels.
