North SA
McAllister Park spans 976 acres on San Antonio's north side between Jones Maltsberger and Wetmore Roads, offering more than 15 miles of multi-use trails through mesquite and prickly pear savannah, riparian creekside forest, and Ashe juniper-live oak woodlands. The park is the go-to destination for mountain biking in the city: the Blue Loop (6.2 miles) is the most popular beginner-to-intermediate route, while the Red Trail's rock garden and a roughly three-foot drop into a pump track challenge experienced riders. In early 2026 the city opened The Grove, a new flow trail designed for all skill levels that winds through a section of native Texas Persimmon trees with banked berms and rollers. All trails are free to use, and the park provides restrooms and water at multiple points. Hikers and trail runners share the dirt singletrack with cyclists, so situational awareness is important on blind corners. The park is heavily shaded in its wooded sections, but the open stretches can be intensely hot by mid-morning from May through September — plan to arrive at sunrise during summer months.
Shade Details
Mature live oak canopy throughout the trail network. One of the shadiest large parks in the city — the wooded sections stay noticeably cooler than the open fields.
