About

An old railroad tunnel dug in 1913 and abandoned by 1942 now houses one of the largest bat colonies in Texas — up to 3 million Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at dusk from late May through October. The viewing area sits directly over the tunnel entrance; rangers narrate as the column of bats spirals upward for 20–30 minutes. A short nature trail connects to nearby woodland. Upper viewing platforms require a fee; the lower area is free.

Shade Details

Live oak woodland around the viewing area provides decent shade. Evening visits don't require shade since the bats emerge at dusk.

Conditions & Tips

Bat season runs roughly May–October. Colony peaks August–September. Upper platform reservations recommended. Check TPWD site for current bat count estimates. Bring insect repellent.
