O.P. Schnabel Park is a 202-acre city park at 9600 Bandera Road on the northwest side, offering more than 8 miles of concrete and dirt trails across four main loops plus a singletrack connector to the Leon Creek Greenway. The Sleeper Trail is the park's most popular dirt singletrack, curving through the western half of the park beneath oak canopy and past dense mountain laurel — its springtime purple blooms fill the air with a grape-candy fragrance unique to the Texas Hill Country. The Outer Loop (3.8 miles, 183 feet of elevation gain) is a good moderate option for hikers and trail runners, while mountain bikers favor the Leon Creek Greenway connector, which extends the ride north to Eisenhower Park or south toward Pearsall Park. Amenities at the Graff Pavilion trailhead include restrooms, drinking water, picnic areas, and athletic fields. A YMCA facility and basketball court sit adjacent to the main parking lot. The park's large resident deer population makes it a reliable spot for wildlife watching, particularly at dawn and dusk. Because many trails are open to the sun, summer visits are best finished before 9 a.m.
