South SA
Pearsall Park is one of San Antonio's most surprising outdoor destinations — a 505-acre park on the southwest side built entirely on a former municipal landfill (known locally as 'Mount Trashmore') that operated from 1961 to 1982. The city's decade-long transformation of the site culminated in a 2016 grand opening revealing the city's largest playground, its largest public skate park (over 15,000 square feet), an 18-hole disc golf course built across the landfill's rolling mounds, and an extensive splash pad complex open daily from March through October. Paved and natural trails loop through the hilltop terrain, offering city-wide views from the elevated former-landfill ridgeline, while a 1.5-mile concrete path follows Leon Creek along the park's edge and connects to the broader Leon Creek Greenway. The park is free and open daily, located at 4838 Old Pearsall Road. Multiple dog parks, fitness stations, zip lines, and large picnic pavilions make it a busy family destination on weekends. The south-side location and open terrain mean midday heat can be intense from May through September — splash pad areas and the Leon Creek riparian corridor offer the best relief.
Shade Details
