San Pedro Springs Park holds the distinction of being the oldest public park in Texas and one of the oldest municipal parks in the United States, with roots in a 1729 royal land grant from King Philip V of Spain and an 1852 official declaration as a public park. The 46-acre property traces an even deeper history: the Payaya people maintained a village called Yanaguana at these springs for thousands of years, and archaeological evidence places human occupation here going back roughly 12,000 years. Today the park features a swimming pool (seasonally open in summer), tennis courts, a skate plaza, playgrounds, and the San Pedro Playhouse — home to the Public Theater of San Antonio — all set among mature trees on a gentle, walkable site just northwest of downtown. The original springs that gave the park its name still exist, though their flow has diminished significantly due to urban development over the Edwards Aquifer. The park was substantially restored between 1997 and 2000, creating a new lake and updated pool facility. Located along San Pedro Avenue near the intersection with W. Myrtle Street, it is easily reached from downtown and serves as a neighborhood anchor for the city's near-north side. Because of its urban location and mostly flat, shaded character, it's a comfortable year-round destination even in summer, though the pool only operates during the seasonal swim season.
Shade Details
Massive cypress and pecan trees provide near-total shade throughout the park.
