North San Antonio
Stone Oak Park is a 245-acre natural area park in north San Antonio that was set aside specifically to protect two karst caves — Bear Cave and Cub Cave — that sit within the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone and channel groundwater into the aquifer that supplies the city's drinking water. The park sits at the intersection of four distinct ecoregions (Edwards Plateau, South Texas Plains, Cross Timbers and Prairies, and Post Oak Savannah), producing an unusually diverse mix of plants, soils, rock formations, and wildlife. Dense Ashe juniper, live oak, and native shrubs shelter white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and a variety of songbirds year-round. The 2.5-mile paved trail loops through both developed and more rugged sections of the park, passing cave entrances, outdoor fitness stations, a 100-seat amphitheater, an outdoor classroom, and public art installations. A HealthBeat Outdoor Fitness System with interactive exercise equipment is located along the southern trail section. The park is located at 20395 Stone Oak Pkwy, open daily, and free to enter; restrooms and drinking fountains are available along the trail.
