West SA
Woodlawn Lake Park is a cherished west-side landmark built around a 30-acre artificial lake created in 1889 by the West End Town Company, then donated to the city in 1919. A 1.5-mile paved loop circles the lake beneath willows and evergreens, passing a small ornamental lighthouse at the water's center — one of the most scenic urban walking routes in San Antonio. A 0.2-mile spur extends under Josephine Tobin Drive on the lake's northwest side, and two fishing docks provide shoreline access for anglers (no boat ramp; non-motorized kayaks and canoes are the only watercraft permitted). The park's 1930s Mission Revival-style Island House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, anchors the main western entrance. Additional amenities include a public swimming pool, tennis courts, a basketball court, picnic pavilions, and a community center. The park sits just west of downtown at the intersection of Fredericksburg Road and Culebra Road, making it easily accessible by car or bike. Because the loop is fully paved, flat, and well shaded by mature trees, it remains one of the more comfortable options for a summer evening stroll after the day's heat breaks.
Shade Details
